After 11 tools: Reflections

Definitely the first Tool that I will use with my students is Tool # 11 Digital Citizenship. It is important for them to learn the norms of behavior with regard to technology use before they start using it. I will be using tips like “THINK” and educational videos to teach these norms like “Digital Etiquette”, “Cyberbullying”, and “Online Safety”.

With Tool # 3 I learned Wordle application that will be great to use in kindergarten. Students will be able to generate word clouds from texts like sight words, parts of the plant, dinosaur’s names, and actually use it with any subject.

Tool # 7 Digital Storytelling was another instructional toll that I definitely will use. I enjoyed making my storytelling which was entertaining and an interactive learning experience. I know my students will learn and enjoy with the use of this application.

Before doing this training I really thought that it was going to be really difficult to use all this technology with my kindergarten students. Now I can’t wait for the new school year and start using all this new technology with them.

Tool # 11

I like “Digital Etiquette” video from www.brainpop.com/technology/digitalcitizenship/

This is a good video to teach students a set of rules for how to behave online. Other good videos from Brain pop to show our students are “Cyberbullying” and “Online Safety”. This videos show different strategies for keeping your online experience pleasant and safe.

http://cybersmartcurriculum.org/lessonsbygrade/ is another great site where we can find lesson plans by grade level to empower students to use the Internet safely, responsibly, and effectively.

At www.cybersmart.gov we can find great information like “THINK” that are tips especially for young kids.
Tell your Mum or Dad if you see something online that upsets you, or if someone makes you feel unhappy. You can also talk to a trusted adult like a teacher: they can help.
Hide your password. Only ever share it with your parents – never with your friends. Someone else could go online pretending to be you and do something that could get you into trouble.
Interesting websites can be fun. Check with Mum or Dad if a site is okay to use before you visit. Sometimes they can set up a good list of sites just for you.
Be Nice to people you talk to on the internet or phone. Name calling or being mean is not cool. Look out for yourself and for others.
Keep your special personal information safe. Never give your real name, address or phone number to anyone you don’t know in the real world. Use a nickname in chat rooms or when you play games on the computer.

Tool # 10

Glow coloring is a good educational app for my kindergarten class. They can learn to create their own images and at the same time they learn about patterns, size, and colors. Then they can save these images and then maybe create an Animoto video with them.

Alphabet Tracing is another educational app that I can use specially at the beginning of the school year. With this educational app we can show our students the proper way to write alphabet letters and numbers.

Kids Math Ace Lite Free is a great app for kindergarten too. Children can use this app to learn counting, addition, and subtraction. Students can continue to learn while playing with these devices at home.

Tool # 9

With Jing we can capture image and can make videos. Using Jing we can give feedback to students, make quick guides to help students in the computer lab, record educational websites for students, and more. Students can use Jing to communicate their understanding and questions they might have, capture and annotate an image for a digital portfolio, and more. Teachers and students can control this sort of visual communication to improve understanding, clarity, and efficiency.

I use Skype at home to communicate with my family but I never thought of using Skype in the classroom. One way to use Skype in the classroom is that we can have audio conferencing to literally plug the students into collaborative exchanges with global partners who are learning similar and related content.

Tool # 8

Videos are useful resources to improve student learning. Using sight and sound, video is the perfect medium for students who are auditory or visual learners. I found video.kidzui.com and neok12.com where we can find hundreds of educational videos k-12. Hope you find them useful.

Tool # 7

Digital storytelling is the process of writing about a story, and adding the multimedia elements of voice, imagery, and music to create a visual story.
The learning experience supported and extended by this application of technology, will empower my students to create and contribute all what they are expected to know and be able to do in the 21st Century.
